As a child, I learned about the ideals for which the United States of America stands. I learned about the tyranny from which our ancestors freed themselves. I learned about the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, and what those ideals meant, and why the founders felt they were important. I learned that America takes the high road.
The Bush administration betrayed this ideal of America. I've been horrified by the Bush policies regarding torture, by the detention of hundreds of people without charge, without recourse to legal counsel. America has been tarnished.
Tonight I feel better about my country. I believe that a man has been elected who still holds those American ideals in his heart. I believe that the very fact of his election is a declaration that America is still the land of the free.
I am not a religious person; I like to say I was raised a lapsed Catholic. When I heard Charles Gibson declare Obama the president-elect, my immediate reaction was to cross myself and say, "Praise God."
